The 2026 Nebraska Rural Poll reports that generative AI tool usage among rural Nebraskans more than doubled from 27% in 2024 to 55% in 2026. Heather Akin, associate professor of strategic communication at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, stated this growth aligns with national trends, citing a 2025 YouGov survey that found 56% of American adults use AI tools. Usage was higher among younger respondents and women, with women more likely to use AI chatbots, a pattern reflecting a narrowing gender gap nationally. AI tools are increasingly used for accessing medical and legal information in areas with limited professional availability, though concerns remain about accuracy and privacy. About one-third of respondents expressed interest in learning to evaluate AI response accuracy, and 45% showed concern about maintaining privacy when using AI. The poll surveyed 881 respondents from 86 Nebraska counties in spring 2026. These findings highlight both the expanding role of AI in rural communities and the challenges of ensuring reliable and private use. Nebraska Public Media published the original report.
